So the new Batman Arkham Asylum Demo popped up today on my Xbox 360 and I decided to give it a little test run. Here’s my impressions:
I have to say it’s been a while since a good Batman game came out on a game console. The last Batman game i played was on the NES (it was really good). From playing this game, it may look like I’ve finally found a great Batman game.
First of, the first cutscenes in the game look really gorgeous. I’m not saying it’s the best thing I’ve ever seen but the scenes were really nice with good detailing of Batman and his costume. Even the Joker looks good and sounds great (I miss the old Batman cartoons).
After the little cutscene in the beginning, you start facing a couple of Joker’s goons and you get to try out the combat system. The combat system is most impressive. The developers call it Free Flow Combat and it definitely feels like free flowing. It’s not a button masher. You press one button to strike an enemy and press the same strike button to an enemey behind you and Batman smoothly transitions to striking that enemy behind him. It evens works well with multiple enemies.
Free Flowing Combat:
I spent the rest of the demo trying out the grappling hook and gliding and striking enemies from behind. I also tested out the Batarang and the Detective mode. The Detective mode is a nice look and gives a different alternative to the fighting part of the game which gamers might seem addicted to.
The only problem I had with the game was the camera angle. It zooms in right behind Batman and shows over the shoulder but it’s not really as good. the camera does zoom out when facing multiple enemies. The camera is not so bad to deter you from playing the game but it would nice if you could manually zoom out.
Overall this game looks to be a good addition to your game collection. With cameos from characters like Mr Freeze, Scarecrow, Bane, Poison Ivy, The Joker and a lot more others, this game could be the best Batman game on a next gen console. Watch out for this game to drop on August 25th.
