Microsoft Pink Project Revealed: The Kin One And Kin Two Phones

Here you go. Microsoft finally revealed their Pink Project. It looks like the rumors were true and it was indeed phones based on social networking a la Motoblur.

To be totally honest: I’m sort of confused.

Many seem to echo my thoughts as many in the social networking sphere can’t make heads or tails about the devices.

The way i see it, if marketed perfectly, these phones could sell. It sounds weird but I’ve seen stranger things happen.

First of all, let me introduce the devices:

Why the name Kin? It’s a short version of Kindred spirits (what the hell are they smoking?)

There are two devices. One is the Kin One (design is weird) and the Kin Two (next-gen sidekick).

Kin One specs:

  • 5 Megapixel camera with Flash. Shoots SD video
  • Monospeaker
  • 4GB memory, 256MB DDR RAM
  • NVIDIA Tegra Processor
  • QWERTY keyboard that slides down from the phone
  • 2.6″ TFT, QVGA (320 x 240) Display
  • Capacitive touch screen
  • GPS
  • Accelerometer
  • Bluetooth
  • USB

Kin Two Specs:

  • 8 Megapixel camera. Shoots 720p(HD) video
  • Stereo speaker
  • 8GB memory
  • NVIDIA Tegra Processor
  • GPS
  • Accelerometer
  • Bluetooth
  • USB
  • Side-sliding QWERTY keyboard.
  • 3.4″ TFT, HVGA (480×320) pixel Display

Microsoft is really going for the youth demographic with these phones. Many will compare these phones to other social phones like the Motorola Cliq and Backflip.

All in all, these phones are more like high powered feature phones and should not be considered as smartphones. Therefore no apps.

One thing that actually caught my eye was that most of your pics and video and other social stuff is uploaded to the cloud and stored on the Kin Studio. A very eye pleasing site made with Silverlight. The software is definitely the winner here. Wonder if Microsoft will open this to other Windows 7 phones.

The interesting thing is that these phones DON’T run Windows Mobile 7.

A lot of people are scratching their heads about these phones. Until I actually have my hands on one of these, I’ll reserve judgement.

Use the link below for more info about the devices. The release date is set for May. Verizon and Vodofone are confirmed as carriers
